Two Separate Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Sailboats Listed Unaccounted For following Leaving Mexican Waters.
A large-scale rescue and recovery operation is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost sailboats loaded with aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Naval Rescue Efforts Deployed
Mexico has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were transporting a minimum of nine personnel, per a military release.
The boats had been expected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
Context of Humanitarian Support to the Island
The island nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation endures widespread nationwide blackouts.
"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy said.
The nine crew members are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Previous Relief Shipment
Previously that week, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received a different ship that had carried 14 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That ship, dubbed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and food.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.
The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Political pressure have been ramped up over the past months, with remarks from several leaders highlighting the complex state of diplomatic ties.
Responding to recent proposals, a high-ranking government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their present status remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its command to locate the sailboats and secure the security of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
