Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.
