The Three Lions to Begin the European Championship 2028 Journey at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will commence their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated passage for a tournament hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.
City’s stadium has not hosted an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were defeated 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to host the national team for their inaugural game on June 10, 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, in the event of winning Group B, their round of 16 match would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the elimination stage at Everton’s ground.
Competition Opening and Rally
The event was inaugurated at an gathering in central London on Wednesday evening. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host FAs were barracked as they arrived the venue by about 50 protesters, who called for the Israeli team to be removed from international football because of the situation in Gaza.
Banners were displayed with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Schedule
The first match of the European Championship will be staged at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include the Welsh team if they secure a place.
The national stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be implemented for Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will cater to family audiences and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that fail to qualify for the finals through that route.
Locations and Knockout Stage
The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight played at the national stadium of each host.
The draw for the qualifiers will be conducted in Belfast, which was excluded as a tournament location last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
Leadership Comment
“This will be a championship for the supporters and a festival of everything we cherish about the sport – its fervor and capacity to unite individuals.”
More than three million tickets, a record for a men’s European Championship, are projected to be offered to attendees.
