The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details hinted.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
