The Gory Animated Film Ending That Haunts Fans
Among all the adult-oriented cartoon movies I have personally viewed, nothing has lingered in my mind as much as the dread-soaked conclusion of the viscerally violent as well as deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in the year 2015, this Spain-based writer-director created a dark, somber , frequently brutal world that included several minor , desolate glimmers of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it stemmed from an impulse to expand the medium further, the director clarified that it was more an attempt to communicate a global, multicultural message regarding “the shared root of all wars.”
That idea is expressed via a group of brightly hued teddy bears , obviously based on a famous line of lovable characters.
Growing up in a society centered on aggression as well as the military-industrial complex, numerous these creatures are obsessed with exterminating the mythical beasts, due to a religious scripture that claims the bears they previously were kings of the forest, until the unicorns drove them out.
A few have not completely accepted the brainwashing, , would rather experiment with substances and mate in the woods.
Unlike their cuddly counterparts, these bright beings have visible genitals , definite libidos.
For one particularly cruel, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the war against unicorns transforms into a path toward dominance — and particularly to authority over his softer, nicer brother Tubby.
This bear is a bully and an obvious psychopath , and when fear takes over his unit and kills his teammates one by one, he takes increasingly influence personally, in increasingly gory, destructive ways.
At the same time, these mythical beings are enduring their own terror, in the form of an expanding, deadly beast in their woods.
“Initially, it appears as a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker said. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and sad film. And by the end, it’s a terrifying movie.”
The Unicorn Wars commences similar to one of the more quirky films by a renowned filmmaker, that uncover a mischievous joy in letting drawn beings swear, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Then it becomes more akin to a darker work from the same creator, with increasingly graphic violence , a tangible connection to the actual horror of conflict.
By the end, it is an outright extreme drama bloodbath.
The fear that turns the film an ideal spooky-season viewing starts a lot earlier than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore fans of gore, for fans of intense movies who desire to see something they’ve never seen on-screen before, and who can handle a story that offers unflinching brutality.
View it in a dimly lit space free from interruptions, and the conclusion will burrow deep within you and linger.
