Scream Original Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a character you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor reveals.
A Triumphant Comeback for Fallon Characters
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, even though dying in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film killer Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Weight of Legendary Status
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the public's reaction. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the offer from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I remember him posing the question. That instance is indelibly imprinted on my psyche," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the original film premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.
"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every Halloween."
The Fear of Disappointing the Fans
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant pressure about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are excited to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Anticipation Run High
While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others come back persists. Maybe they live rent-free in Sidney's mind, similar to a prior storyline. Or, maybe they are in some way all alive in a strange shared situation. The possibility of a meta-horror story, reminiscent of earlier horror movies, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
