Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle management.
