Israelis have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single most fatal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a danger to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the relatives of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the North African tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of indirect talks to examine the terms of the proposal.

A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an late session of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the earlier meeting concluded without tangible results, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to narrow the gaps between the two sides.

Key Matters in Negotiations

  • A permanent ceasefire
  • The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the area

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home now and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax again. Then we can commence heal," she continued.

Near the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel reports 48 remain in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be living.

Activist a participant explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israelis desire the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, mourners came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and artillery could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern district of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"When the night arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing last year, described.

"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my little child who rests his head on me all night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in the urban area reported it had accepted the bodies of six people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated additional victims had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, medics said.
