“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the moments before the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
