Food Benefits Expected to End for Over 40 Million Throughout Continuing US Government Shutdown

Federal agriculture authorities stated on Saturday that monthly food benefits from a major federal welfare initiatives are not going out during the coming month amid the persistent federal government shutdown.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The funding lapse had reached nearly a month as officials revealed the news, in response to appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives pushing agriculture officials to tap into reserve accounts to fund November's food assistance.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the department confirmed. “Currently, no payments will be distributed” starting next month.

Widespread Impact

Over 40 million Americans count on these food benefits, per official statistics. Some regions, like one southwestern state, reliance on the program reaches one-fifth of the population.

Internal communications seen by journalists indicated that federal authorities decided against using contingency funding for November food benefits.

Political Stalemate

Republicans and Democrats are still at odds about the way to finance and restart the federal government.

A statement from the head of a budget research center noted that the White House could have acted to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.

“It could have, and should have acted before now to get ready to use these funds,” the comments added. “Rather, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to influence Democratic senators to approve legislation that would resume federal functions.

States Prepare

Governors in multiple regions declared states of emergency in recent days to allocate funds for hunger relief preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping during the upcoming period.
