British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
