One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated how corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch of an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will independently develop this new flavor within a personal series showcasing causes the company was prevented from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Between Creators versus Parent Company

This latest development escalates the continuing conflict between the world-famous dessert company and Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed how the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".

The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen revealed via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its colors, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Previous Activism plus Recent Developments

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories occupied by Israel, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.

The new product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that was first created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Plans

Mr. Cohen revealed how he will create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to Unilever.

This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, following decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised after corporate moves to curb its social activism.

At that time, Ben Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
